Contemporary Indian fashion is gaining a foothold in Singapore with top Indian designers invited to showcase their talents and sell their works of art.

Forget sarees and other traditional Indian outfits. The fashion extravaganza is all about contemporary designs that aim to appeal to the modern woman.

The "fashion forward" pieces have been gaining much popularity in Singapore so much so, that the demand has driven a businesswoman here, to turn her fine dining restaurant into a fashion runway.

She said it is also her way of giving Indian designers that rare platform to show their best works in Singapore.

Sajni Gill, chief operating officer, Shopping Bag S, said: "All my friends and customers have really been requesting me to bring back Indian fashion. These include Chinese and the expats as they love Indian fashion and they have been waiting for the designers.

“This fashion show is trying to bring the Indian designers on a very regular basis to the very regular customers earlier on and they have actually been hounding me to have these shows. It is a very relaxed atmosphere and they love shopping after the show".

Prices for each piece start from S$200 and each is a work of art that forms the Spring summer collection of three Indian designers who want to put poetry into fashion.

Some looks may be stripped of the heavy embellishments that maybe typical of traditional Indian wear.

But as one designer points out, the pieces still aim to bring out what's unique about today's Indian fashion industry.

Shalini Jaikaria, Indian Fashion Designer, said: "We are really inspired by the the colours of the flowers and geisha designs. The Geisha label is about romance so our clothes are always romantic and pretty.

“A lot of these clothes are sold in Paris and they sell in boutiques. It has Indian aesthetics, but it does not scream Indian, in a sense it is very subtly Indian, that it is made in India and it has a hand-crafted feel which is an Indian factor. But the designs and look are contemporary and it has a universal global look."

And the buyers could not agree more as they didn't seem to mind paying more for such designs.

Said one customer: “It is very tastefully done. I like the pieces very much and they are very natural.

“Actually I just came back from Delhi and this is exactly what's being marketed. It is all western outfits with Indian embroidery and the shawls are to die for. So I think what they are showing now is perfect for us,” said another customer.

And to perfect the look, bracelets, jewellery as well as exquisite Indian handbags also seem to be a hit with the women.

The collections will be available at Iwannagohome! located at Tanglin Mall. - CNA/vm
